During a period of critical geopolitical developments, the meeting between Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Qatar’s Emir took place. “I appreciate the fact that you are here to discuss the concerning regional developments as well as the bilateral economic cooperation that is constantly strengthening,” emphasized the Greek Prime Minister to the Emir and highlighted Greece’s longstanding position, noting that “Greece stood by all Gulf countries” and supported Qatar “against an unprovoked attack.”
Regarding the economy, Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted the country’s positive trajectory, stating: “I appreciate Qatar’s commitment to invest in Greece. Our economy has recorded significant progress. We have achieved the largest debt reduction as a percentage of GDP in OECD history and we are growing faster than other EU countries.” At the same time, he expressed optimism that “a new chapter in economic cooperation” between the two countries is opening.
The need for de-escalation of tensions in the broader region was a key point in the talks, with the Prime Minister noting: “We appreciate your country’s efforts for a ceasefire and the establishment of sustainable peace, to ensure permanent freedom of navigation in the region, which will allow us to overcome the consequences affecting all economies.”
Qatar’s Emir in meeting with Mitsotakis: “Your economy is doing well under your leadership”
Qatar’s Emir, for his part, thanked Greece for its stance, emphasizing: “I want to thank you and your country for standing by friends in this conflict. We appreciate your country’s efforts,” the Qatar Emir noted in a positive and optimistic tone. “We hope this conflict will end very quickly through negotiations,” he added, and referring to bilateral relations, he noted “we are very happy with these relations,” adding “our investments in Greece are doing excellently.”
He praised the trajectory of the Greek economy, stating that “your economy is doing well under your leadership” and expressed interest in further cooperation: “We look forward to other opportunities for investments in your country.”
Qatar’s Emir did not fail to emphasize the importance of strengthening ties during a period of international challenges: “Looking at what’s happening in the world, it’s important to strengthen these relationships.”
