A new wave of bad weather is expected to affect Greece from Sunday evening (1/11), bringing rain and thunderstorms that will gradually spread across most regions, including Attica. While the weather phenomena expected on Friday and Saturday will generally be limited in intensity and duration, the weather picture will change significantly by the end of the weekend.
Speaking to parapolitika.gr, meteorologist Christina Rigou explains that the new deterioration will become more pronounced on Monday (2/11), with rain and thunderstorms once again hitting Euboea and Pelion — regions that were particularly hard hit by the previous storm system. However, according to Rigou, the prolonged and continuous rainfall of recent days is not expected to repeat, although the already saturated soil conditions call for heightened caution.
How the weather will develop from Friday through Monday
According to Ms. Rigou, on Friday (30/10) and Saturday (31/10), rain is expected in various parts of the country, though with lower intensity and duration compared to the previous days’ weather events. Sporadic thunderstorms cannot be ruled out, particularly in coastal and offshore areas.
Conditions will begin to shift on Sunday, as thunderstorms gradually spread across a larger portion of the country, with a focus on western and northern Greece. “From Sunday night into Monday, the weather will be unsettled almost everywhere, with rain and thunderstorms,” the meteorologist notes, clarifying that the deterioration will effectively begin late Sunday night and impact most regions throughout Monday.
Attica: When to expect rain and thunderstorms
Regarding Attica, Ms. Rigou forecasts that the weather will remain periodically cloudy throughout the three-day period. On Friday, some localized rainfall is expected, mainly during the midday and afternoon hours, while on Saturday there is a chance of sporadic thunderstorms from noon onwards.
However, as she clarifies, Saturday’s weather events are not cause for particular concern, as they do not constitute widespread severe weather across the Athens basin. The most significant change is expected on Monday, when the new storm wave will also affect Athens, bringing rain and thunderstorms. As for temperatures, on Friday the mercury in Athens will reach 20 degrees Celsius, while on Saturday it will drop to 18 degrees.
Euboea and Pelion: New storms after the devastation — why caution is needed
Ms. Rigou makes particular reference to Euboea and Pelion, two regions that were at the epicenter of the recent severe weather and are expected to be affected again by the new storm wave. As she clarifies, this time the weather phenomena do not appear to share the characteristics of the previous days, when exceptionally high rainfall totals were recorded.
Specifically, Euboea received approximately 400 millimeters of rainfall within five days — an amount that, according to the meteorologist, corresponds to four times the region’s average monthly rainfall for October. In Pelion, similarly, around 300 millimeters of rainfall was recorded. “Continuous, prolonged rainfall is not expected — it will be a passing wave of temporary thunderstorms,” she notes. However, she stresses that the soil in these specific areas is already saturated from previous rainfall, and significant damage has already occurred. For this reason, even if the new weather events are shorter in duration, caution is required when they develop.
Southerly winds up to force 8 and a temperature drop from Wednesday
The new storm system will also be accompanied by strengthening winds. From Sunday onwards, winds will gradually shift to southerly directions across the entire country, while on Monday their intensity will reach force 6 to 7 and potentially force 8 locally in the Aegean.
The southerly winds will persist through Tuesday, while from Wednesday a change in the weather pattern is expected, with northerly winds prevailing and a drop in temperatures. As Ms. Rigou points out, the bad weather on Sunday and Monday will be characterized mainly by rain and thunderstorms, along with some snowfall at higher elevations, though without any significant cold during daytime hours.
On the other hand, the low temperatures recorded in the early morning hours will continue to be a hallmark of the autumn weather in the coming days.
