Revealing data has emerged about the AI-powered traffic cameras installed on major roads across Athens. Nearly 1 in 2 drivers continues to run red lights, showing little regard for the safety of pedestrians and fellow motorists. The artificial intelligence cameras deployed to record traffic violations have now issued a total of 5,785 fines.

According to a report by STAR, of the total fines issued, 43.4% relate to running red lights, 21.1% to the driver failing to wear a seatbelt, and 12.5% to the front passenger failing to wear a seatbelt. Since the cameras were installed, drivers have become noticeably more cautious — particularly on the main roads of Attica — in an effort to avoid being fined.
According to the report, in just 10 minutes in front of one camera station, four violations were recorded: two for running a red light, one for failing to wear a seatbelt, and one for ignoring a road sign.
