The case of the murder of a 38-year-old British national, whose body was discovered inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in Kypseli on July 18, has been solved by the Organized Crime Division. A 26-year-old Afghan national has been identified in connection with the case and charged with premeditated homicide, robbery, and violation of weapons legislation. The suspect was arrested on weapons charges after a search of his residence led to the seizure of a replica pistol and a knife.
Kypseli: Authorities managed to recover usable fingerprints
Identifying the victim proved to be an exceptionally difficult process, as the body was in an advanced state of decomposition. However, forensic investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division managed to recover usable fingerprints, which — through Interpol and in cooperation with US authorities — were matched to a 38-year-old British national. Investigation findings revealed that the woman had entered Greece on June 26 and had been staying at a friend’s residence in Piraeus until July 10, when she left for an unknown destination within the Attica region. Analysis of preliminary investigative material and digital review of surveillance footage led to the identification of the 26-year-old suspect, who was brought in for questioning on July 30 by the Organized Crime Division. According to the Hellenic Police, the suspect confessed to his actions during the interrogation.
According to the investigation’s findings, the accused placed the victim’s body inside a suitcase and transported it to the abandoned building where it was later discovered. In the days that followed, he also used the victim’s bank cards to make cash withdrawals. Crucial to solving the case was the cooperation between the Hellenic Police and the competent authorities of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Scotland, through Interpol, the National Crime Agency (NCA), and Police Scotland.
The 26-year-old has been referred to the competent public prosecutor’s office.
