The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Yu Ting, a 50-year-old translator, continues to baffle authorities, as nearly seven weeks after she was last seen, there is still no solid evidence leading to her whereabouts. The 50-year-old translator left her home in Artemida on the morning of May 20th, reportedly heading to the local municipal office for an administrative errand — but she was never seen or heard from again. Her husband, Vasilis Karavasilis, speaking to Live News, insists that all of her personal belongings are still in the house, a fact which, he argues, rules out the possibility that she chose to disappear voluntarily.
According to the Live News report, security camera footage captured the moment the woman left her residence at 09:55 a.m., with no confirmed sighting of her movements since. The case remains open, and police authorities are investigating every possible scenario, paying particular attention to her professional activities.
The missed appointment and the key witness testimony
A significant new dimension has been added to the case through the testimony of a building manager in central Athens, who revealed that he had a scheduled meeting with the 50-year-old at 4:00 p.m. on the very day she disappeared. Speaking on the Live News program, he confirmed that Yu Ting never showed up.
“We had an appointment that day at 4:00 p.m. and she never appeared,” he said. He explained that approximately twenty days later, he was informed by a man he knew as Chen that the woman was being searched for. “She never came. And then Chen messaged me twenty days later saying they were looking for her. He told me if I could call the missing persons helpline and tell them what I knew. That’s all,” he recounted.
The appointment in question involved maintenance work at an apartment in a building on Charilaou Trikoupi Street, where the building manager and a plumber were due to arrive. Yu Ting, according to information gathered, had agreed to open the apartment on behalf of her Chinese client who owned the property.
“I manage a building on Charilaou Trikoupi Street. Two floors in the building were purchased by Chinese nationals. All of them are represented by a Mr. Chen. One of those apartments belongs to a Chinese woman named Lei. This Lei is a friend of Yu Ting. I arranged an appointment with Ting for her to come and open the apartment,” he explained.
Despite the fact that the meeting had been arranged the day before, the 50-year-old never showed up. “On that day we didn’t speak at all, not once. We arrived for our appointment with the plumber, and she never appeared. I was looking for her, Chen was looking for her, Lei was looking for her. Nothing. Not a trace — she had vanished,” he said.
The investigation, the delayed missing persons report, and a possible financial motive
The case remains unsolved 48 days after the woman’s disappearance. Authorities were officially notified on June 10th — approximately twenty days after she was last seen — a delay which, according to Greek Police spokeswoman Constantia Dimoglidou, significantly hindered the investigation. On June 13th, a woman contacted authorities claiming she may have seen the missing person at the Egaleo metro station. “An Asian woman came up to me and asked which direction the airport was. I told her it was on the same side as me. She then left and headed toward Piraeus. I told her that was the wrong direction. She said ‘no, thank you’ and walked away. I went home, saw the Silver Alert, and called in. I said I thought I had seen this woman there,” the witness recounted.
The witness clarified that she cannot be entirely certain it was Yu Ting, but noted that the woman’s appearance and clothing matched the description that had been made public. “I’m not certain, but I think the description I gave — the clothes — match what she was wearing. She seemed lost. That’s it. She asked me about the airport, I pointed her in the right direction. She had no luggage, nothing. And she went in the opposite direction, toward Piraeus,” she said.
Her husband, also speaking to Live News, stated that all of his wife’s personal belongings remain in their home, insisting there are no signs she left in an organized manner or planned to abandon the household. He believes the most likely scenario is that she has fallen victim to a criminal act.
Police authorities are also investigating the possibility of a financial motive, as Yu Ting is reported to have handled significant sums of money as part of her professional activities. Furthermore, checks conducted so far have confirmed that no departure from Greece has been recorded under her legal travel documents — a detail that deepens the mystery surrounding her disappearance, while the investigation continues in every possible direction.
