The Fire Service and Civil Protection authorities remain on high alert as wildfires continue to burn across the country, with emergency services ready to deploy resources and issue 112 emergency alerts to protect residents wherever necessary. According to the Civil Protection Fire Risk Forecast Map, the fire danger remains high across many regions. The three main fronts where firefighting efforts are concentrated are Koufalía in Thessaloniki, Vassiliká in Corfu, and Pallini in Attica.
The fire in Pallini
Starting with Pallini, the fire has been contained after a 112 emergency alert was issued to residents and significant firefighting forces were deployed to the scene. The fire broke out at around 12:00 noon on Saturday in an area of low vegetation, near the Nasioutzik estate and adjacent to the Candia Strom facilities in Pallini, prompting an immediate response from the Fire Service. According to the latest update from firefighting authorities, crews managed to contain the blaze within just 45 minutes.
A total of 47 firefighters were deployed to the scene, supported by two foot patrol teams from the 1st EMODE unit, volunteers, and 20 fire trucks, along with two firefighting aircraft and two helicopters providing aerial support. Water tankers from the Attica Regional Authority also participated in the operation.
According to the Fire Service, the blaze broke out in low vegetation among olive trees, with firefighting crews working swiftly to contain its spread.
Throughout the entire operation, the Unified Operations and Crisis Management Coordination Center (ESKODIK) monitored the fire’s development in real time using drones equipped with both optical and thermal cameras for a comprehensive view of the fire front.
Due to the fire’s rapid development, a warning message was sent via the 112 emergency alert system to residents of Pallini.
The fire in Thessaloniki
A fire also broke out at midday in the Koufalía area of Thessaloniki. The blaze, which erupted under unknown circumstances, is burning through low vegetation. A 112 emergency alert was activated, urging residents to remain on standby and follow the instructions of local authorities.
Twenty-six firefighters are currently operating at the scene, supported by one foot patrol team from the 2nd EMODE unit, volunteers, 9 vehicles, and one helicopter.
Water tankers and heavy machinery from the Central Macedonia Regional Authority are also assisting in the firefighting effort.
The fire in Corfu
A wildfire broke out in a rural and forested area shortly after 12:30, near the settlement of Vassiliká in Corfu.
Ground and aerial firefighting forces were immediately mobilized, including 24 firefighters with one foot patrol team, volunteers, and 6 vehicles, while 2 aircraft and 1 helicopter were deployed for aerial firefighting operations.
Scattered residential properties exist in the area, though none are currently under threat.
The Corfu Arson Investigation Unit is heading to the fire scene to investigate the cause of the blaze.
