Wall collapse in Pangrati caused by powerful winds
The most serious incident occurred in Pangrati, where a section of a wall collapsed at a construction site on Ergotimou Street, where a residential building was undergoing renovation. The collapse blocked traffic from the junction with Pratinou Street. Both the Greek Police and the Fire Service responded to the scene, and fortunately no injuries were reported from the debris. The incident is believed to have been caused by a combination of worker negligence and the strong winds.
Just a short distance away, at the intersection of Michalakopoulou and Lourou Streets, firefighters launched a rescue operation to free a driver trapped in their vehicle after a tree trunk fell onto the car. According to initial reports, the driver was unharmed, while three fire service vehicles were deployed to the scene.
Meanwhile, the violent winds caused additional trees to fall at various points across the capital, including in the Lenorman and Karytsi areas, causing traffic disruptions and prompting responses from the relevant emergency services.
Fire in Acharnes
At the same time, a fire that broke out in the Spyrou Vrettou Street area of Acharnes was brought under control. Firefighting crews remain on site extinguishing the last remaining hotspots, as the extremely strong winds continue to hamper their efforts. As a precautionary measure, the road remains closed.
Authorities are maintaining heightened alert as powerful wind gusts continue to create hazardous conditions across many parts of the Attica region.
