Vandals in Volos kill 200-year-old plane tree with chemical substance
According to information from thenewspaper.gr, this majestic tree — which had long provided cool shade to the busy commercial strip near a local pharmacy — withered and died within just a matter of hours. The incident sent shockwaves through the local community, raising urgent questions about what had happened. Initial findings suggest the destruction was not caused by natural factors. Three holes were discovered in the tree’s trunk, all remarkably similar in height, diameter, depth, and angle — a pattern strongly indicative of deliberate human intervention. Reports indicate the holes were likely used to inject chemical substances or herbicides directly into the tree, triggering its rapid death.
Local winemaker Nikos Tokalis expressed his disbelief at the unprecedented sight, describing how the tree that had graced the pedestrian street for decades was effectively destroyed overnight. The case has already been referred to the authorities. Residents of the area filed a formal complaint with police, demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police have launched a preliminary inquiry and are currently reviewing footage from security cameras in the area in an effort to trace the movements of potential suspects and identify those responsible for the act.
