New details are emerging about the sudden death of a 36-year-old doctor from Mytilene, the young woman who lost her life just days after giving birth to her first child. According to information from the forensic examination carried out in Athens, the woman died from multi-organ failure, while the exact cause of death remains undetermined at this time.
The 36-year-old gave birth naturally, without any surgical intervention, to a healthy baby girl at 39 weeks of pregnancy, on the afternoon of last Friday. However, by Saturday evening she developed a high fever and her condition deteriorated rapidly. It has since emerged that doctors at Mytilene Hospital conducted additional diagnostic tests, investigating the possibility of retained placental tissue following delivery, though it has not been confirmed whether any relevant findings were identified.
The forensic examiner is now awaiting the complete medical file, as well as the results of cultures and laboratory tests from both Mytilene Hospital and Attiko Hospital, in order to determine whether an infection or bacterial agent triggered the collapse of her system.
So far, there are no indications of any perinatal event or complication during labor.
Death of 36-year-old doctor from Mytilene: “Septic shock is being investigated as a possible cause”
The president of POEDIN (Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees), Michalis Giannakos, described the case as “incomprehensible” in an interview with STAR television, stressing that this was a young woman with no known health conditions who delivered without complications before experiencing a sudden and dramatic deterioration.
As he noted, the clinical picture being described is consistent with symptoms of septic shock, though no definitive conclusion can yet be drawn.
“We need to examine whether a multidrug-resistant bacterium was involved. We have lost many patients to such infections, and this is a factor that must be thoroughly investigated,” he stated.
He also emphasized that there is currently no evidence to suggest that any medical error occurred during her treatment, and noted that all possibilities remain open until the histological and laboratory test results are complete.
The 36-year-old was transferred to Athens in critical condition, where she suffered cardiac arrests and, despite the extraordinary efforts of medical staff, could not be revived.
The histological examination results and culture findings are expected to shed light on the precise causes behind the tragic death of the young doctor, who had brought her first child into the world just days earlier.
