Those who knew her describe a loss that is almost impossible to comprehend. Magda was not simply a healthcare professional. She was a deeply beloved figure on the island, having devoted the final years of her life to serving its people.
Mytilene: “Magda always had a smile and a positive energy about her”
“The community is plunged in grief. No one can believe she is gone,” the president of the Mytilene Hospital Workers’ Union, Stathis Kleanthis, told parapolitika.gr. Kleanthis knew the 36-year-old well through her professional career.
As he describes, Magda stood out not only for her medical expertise but also for her character. “She never left the ward easily. She always showed up with a smile and a positive energy,” he said, painting the picture of a woman who had learned to give without counting the hours or the effort.
The 36-year-old had worked for eight years at Mytilene Hospital, most of which were spent in the Emergency Department. There, she faced difficult cases daily — human suffering and critical decisions — earning the deep respect of everyone who worked alongside her. In the past year, she had taken on a permanent position with EKAB (Greece’s National Emergency Medical Service), continuing to serve on the front lines.
The rapid deterioration of her health
The tragedy becomes even harder to bear for those who loved her, as Magda was experiencing one of the happiest moments of her life. She had just brought her baby girl into the world and was planning the new chapter unfolding before her as a mother.
Her partner remained by her side until the very last moment. He did not leave for a single minute, watching anxiously as she fought for her life. From the joy of the birth to the devastating hours that followed, he was constantly beside her, hoping for a positive outcome that ultimately never came.
According to Mr. Kleanthis, her health deteriorated with alarming speed. The day after the birth of her child — Saturday, June 20 — she developed a high fever and her clinical condition began to worsen rapidly. The situation progressed within an extremely short period of time, with doctors determining that admission to the ICU and intubation were necessary.
On Tuesday, June 23, it was deemed necessary to transfer her to a hospital in Athens to receive specialized care. However, the 36-year-old never made it to her destination, passing away during the transfer.
Today, her family, friends, colleagues, and the entire island of Lesbos are anxiously awaiting the results of examinations that will shed light on the exact cause of the tragedy. Until then, one thing is certain: the island mourns the loss of a young woman who dedicated her life to caring for others, and who was taken at the very moment she was preparing to embrace her own future as a mother.
