The prosecutor has filed criminal charges of attempted murder and related law violations against the 29-year-old woman accused of a violent attack on her 24-year-old partner in the Ano Poli district of Thessaloniki. According to police, the incident occurred yesterday at approximately 10 a.m. in a ground-floor apartment. Reports indicate that following a heated argument, the woman allegedly attacked the 24-year-old with two knives, leaving him injured. However, the defense is presenting a very different account. The woman’s attorney, Margarita Symeonidou, argued that her client did not attack her partner without cause, but is herself a victim of domestic violence who acted out of extreme fear.
“My client is not a woman who attacked her partner completely without reason, as is being incorrectly reported. On the contrary, we are talking about yet another victim of domestic violence,” attorney Symeonidou stated. According to her, the 29-year-old had been repeatedly beaten by her partner, and just days before the incident, he had attempted to strangle her, with her barely escaping with her life.
Thessaloniki: What the defense attorney says about the 29-year-old who stabbed her partner with two knives
“Her first instinct was to jump from the balcony, but he took her phone and locked her inside the apartment, leaving her feeling helpless once again,” the defense attorney claimed.
The lawyer argues that her client acted in self-defense in an attempt to save her own life, and also notes that it was the woman herself who called emergency services following the incident. She further emphasizes that her client had not previously reported the abuse because she lacked the courage to do so, although neighbors were reportedly aware of the situation, having frequently heard her screams and cries for help.
“This case must be examined not only through the lens of the attack itself — which may carry criminal consequences — but with the understanding that she could very well be a victim of domestic violence,” Symeonidou stated, stressing that her client was in a state of extreme fear and reacted, as she claims, purely in order to survive.
The case is now in the hands of the justice system, which is tasked with fully investigating the circumstances under which this violent incident unfolded.
