Authorities in the Regional Unit of Ilia have raised the alarm following the confirmation of a new sheep and goat pox outbreak. The new cases were detected in the Zacharo area, with sampling tests revealing that 95 animals are currently infected. According to ilialive.gr, the Regional Unit of Ilia mobilized its response mechanisms immediately. The Deputy Regional Governor of Ilia, Nikos Korovesis, moved swiftly to coordinate additional preventive interventions aimed at stopping the further spread of the disease.

Sheep and goat pox: Infected animals to be culled
It should be noted that the infected animals are expected to be culled. In addition, starting Friday (June 19), a disinfection station will be set up at the junction towards Figaleia, on the Zacharo–Kyparissia national highway.
The station will operate daily from 08:00 to 14:00, carrying out disinfection procedures on vehicles, agricultural machinery, and equipment passing through the junction.
Competent authorities stress that strict implementation of biosecurity measures is critical to preventing the transmission of the disease, especially at a time when the livestock sector is facing significant challenges due to zoonotic diseases and rising production costs.

Meanwhile, the Regional Unit of Ilia is urging livestock farmers, animal transporters, primary sector professionals, and drivers passing through the area to cooperate fully with disinfection teams and strictly follow the instructions of the competent veterinary authorities. Deputy Regional Governor Nikos Korovesis stated that the emergence of a new outbreak demands immediate mobilization and heightened vigilance, emphasizing that there is no room for complacency. He noted that all available preventive measures are being activated to protect livestock, farmers, and the local economy, while calling on all parties involved to act responsibly.
At the same time, the Regional Unit of Ilia, in cooperation with veterinary services and Civil Protection authorities, has given assurances that the full range of prescribed measures will be enforced to prevent the spread of the disease and safeguard the long-term viability of local livestock production.
