Great concern and unrest prevails at this moment in Northern Evia, as the region finds itself at the epicenter of a powerful seismic swarm. The successive tremors, which were particularly felt throughout the island as well as in Attica, forced terrified residents to rush into the streets.
It began two minutes before 1 PM on Sunday (7/6), when the first strong seismic tremor measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale was recorded. According to the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter was located six kilometers south of Prokopi, Evia. However, the ground did not stop shaking, as two more powerful aftershocks followed, with the largest reaching 5.2 on the Richter scale, intensifying the panic.
Earthquake swarm in Evia: Damage to homes, shops and… a baptism that was interrupted
Initial reports from the area speak of material damage. The earthquake, due to its shallow focal depth, was extremely violent, resulting in damage to houses and commercial shops in the area, where objects fell and glass windows shattered.
Characteristic of the intensity and panic that prevailed is the incident at the church of Saint George, outside Prokopi. At that moment, a baptism ceremony was in progress in the church. As soon as the earth began to shake the building with force, chaos ensued, with the priest and guests rushing out terrified to the courtyard for protection.
