Increased traffic has been observed since early Friday morning (29/5) at Piraeus port, ahead of the Whitsun long weekend, with ferries departing 90% full bound for the Cyclades islands, while other destinations, both near and far from Athens, remain high on holiday travelers’ preference lists.

Whitsun weekend: Holiday exodus begins
Intense activity prevails at gate E7 of Piraeus port from early morning, as three ferry departures to the Cyclades were scheduled by 07:30. According to port authority officials and ferry company employees, passenger traffic is moving at particularly high levels, with most ferries departing nearly full.
Authorities’ recommendations
Although today marks the beginning of national university entrance exams, many families are leaving Athens. Traffic increases as time passes, with authorities advising travelers departing on morning routes to arrive at the port at least 15 to 20 minutes earlier.
When is the holiday exodus expected to peak
By 09:30, 7 routes to the Cyclades and other island destinations had been scheduled, however, traffic is expected to increase in the afternoon, as travelers who work until midday and haven’t secured an additional day off will then depart. Consequently, from Friday afternoon (29/5) onwards, another 12 routes to the Cyclades, Dodecanese and other island destinations across the country have been scheduled.
