The hearing for the Tempe train crash began with objections regarding prosecution support. During the trial proceedings, the evening shift station master from February 28, 2023, through his lawyer, cited chronic deficiencies in Greek railway safety systems and his own inexperience, requesting dismissal of the Greek state’s civil action against him.
The state’s civil action targets three station masters from the evening and afternoon shifts, as well as the former head of the Larissa Inspection Department of OSE’s Traffic Support Service.
Tempe trial: What defense lawyers argued
Defense lawyers for the defendants highlighted the state’s responsibility for the malfunction of critical railway safety systems, which they argued were decisive factors in the tragedy.
The proceedings continue with examination of objections from remaining defendants, primarily concerning representation by Bar Associations and the Greek Train Drivers Union “Panhellenic Union of Traction Personnel.” Other defendants submitted objections regarding statements made about breach of duty charges against three OSE officials related to the station master’s transfer.
Before the hearing began, a lawyer for the former OSE president announced withdrawal of an objection concerning representation of victims’ families and injured parties.
Six defendants were present at today’s hearing, while police presence remained discreet.
The prosecution expressed satisfaction with recent changes made to the courtroom.
