Greek society watches in shock as developments unfold in the Zografou case, where just before noon on Monday (30/3) police officers discovered the macabre scene of two dead women inside a sealed bedroom. The bodies of 91-year-old Anna and 56-year-old Marina were found in an advanced state of decomposition, and according to information from the on-site forensic examination, their deaths occurred at least 40 days before discovery. However, local residents provide a different perspective, suggesting the two women disappeared at least three months ago.
Zografou case: How the 54-year-old deceived relatives and family friends
The investigation centers on 54-year-old Giannis, son and brother of the deceased women, and apparently the tragic mastermind behind the makeshift “tomb” in his mother’s bedroom. After being brought in for questioning on Sunday evening, prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant charging him with serial murder. For weeks, he seemingly did everything possible to maintain the horrific secret. One by one, relatives, friends and neighbors are coming forward to describe the lies he told to mislead them. Sometimes the two women had supposedly gone for a walk, other times they were sleeping, or away on a trip. Even when confronted by police, he chose to hide the truth by directing them to another family property. But Sunday night, his deadly game of hide-and-seek finally ended.
A relatively tidy but largely neglected house with one sealed bedroom. The door was closed with putty, hoping the deadly secret would remain trapped inside, along with the smell. Meanwhile, the house shutters remained hermetically sealed. “My mother and sister died from natural causes. All I did was hide their bodies. I didn’t want anyone to know they had died,” he reportedly told police. The explanation might hold some water to a degree. However, the forensic pathologist will unravel the mystery and provide answers. “My sister was sick. She died a few weeks ago and two days later my mother died. I put them in the room and closed the door,” he reportedly said.
The mechanism and motive – What forensic investigation will examine in the Zografou case
From the police crime scene investigation, the findings or lack thereof have already formed a specific picture of what happened, to a significant degree. However, the possibility of direct homicide has not yet been ruled out. Notably, no blood stains were found according to reports, nor traces suggesting a struggle. Therefore, the forensic pathologist’s scope of investigation will be relatively limited. The first priority will be determining the mechanism of death for both women. In the second phase, the date of death will be significantly narrowed down, which will be finalized after specialized examinations. Even the sequence of deaths will play its role in shaping the indictment.
The homicide question is expected to challenge judicial officials, since there is no clear motive so far. The scenario suggesting the 54-year-old faces psychiatric problems remains on the table, while there are reports that his sister was also in a similar condition. It should be noted that no complaints of domestic violence had been filed with authorities. Likewise, at first glance, the 54-year-old does not appear to have a significant criminal record.
