An ancient mosaic was accidentally discovered in central Athens during renovation works being carried out on Euripides Street. It covers a considerable area and, despite the passage of time, remains remarkably well-preserved in several sections.

The public has welcomed this development with great interest, as many people stop at the site, located between the Aiolou pedestrian street and Athinas Street, attempting to glimpse the archaeological find, which has been covered with a special white protective covering while the area has been fenced off with temporary barriers.

Local shop owners seem to be closely following the conservation work, reporting that the mosaic cleaning was completed in recent hours and its relocation is now being planned. “Let us lend a hand,” a shopkeeper is heard jokingly saying, though also revealing his frustration with the extended duration of the construction site, which began before the Tsiknopempti celebration on February 12th.
What remains remarkable is that even today, in areas within the historic center, fragments of the ancient past continue to surface. No matter which stone we lift, centuries of history still lie hidden beneath.
