Former minister and New Democracy MP Dimitris Stamatis has passed away at the age of 75. He had been battling a serious illness in recent years. Dimitris Stamatis had served among other positions as president of Deposits and Loans.

Dimitrios Stamatis was born in Thessaloniki. He was a permanent resident of Thessaloniki, where he lived with his wife and two children. He studied at the Law School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and actively practiced law.
In 1985 he was elected for the first time as an MP for Thessaloniki A’ constituency with New Democracy, serving until 1993. He also served as General Secretary of the former Ministry of Transport and Communications. During the period 2005-2009, he served as General Secretary of the then Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
On June 21, 2012, he was sworn in as Minister of State in the three-party coalition government led by New Democracy president Antonis Samaras, where he was responsible for the smooth operation and coordination among government partners.
In the January 2015 parliamentary elections, he was a candidate in the second position of New Democracy’s national constituency ballot, a position for which he was elected.
