Russia unveiled its latest nuclear submarine named “Khabarovsk” in recent days. This submarine is capable of carrying the nuclear drone “Poseidon,” known as the “nuclear doomsday weapon” in Russian media. The submarine’s launch ceremony took place on Saturday evening (01/11), conducted by Russia’s Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, in the presence of Russian Navy Chief Admiral Alexander Moiseyev and other top shipyard officials, at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk. “Today marks a significant event for us – the heavy nuclear destroyer Khabarovsk hits the water from the famous Sevmash shipyard,” Belousov said during his speech.

Meanwhile, Russia announced that in October it conducted tests of the autonomous underwater vehicle “Poseidon,” which is equipped with a nuclear reactor. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the tests were conducted at the end of the month. After launch from the submarine, the prototype used its own nuclear power unit for underwater movement along a predetermined route. The vehicle can carry either conventional or nuclear warheads, and its reactor provides, as Russia claims, unlimited range.

The construction contract for Khabarovsk was signed in 2012. The submarine was laid down for construction on July 27, 2014, at the Sevmash shipyard. Initially, the schedule called for launch in 2018, but the timeline was delayed several times. After completion of the presentation, Khabarovsk will be equipped and undergo sea trials, which are expected to last several years.
