What Maria Karystianos said in her interview on the “Inappropriate Conversations” podcast by Efimerida ton Syntakton, along with communications expert Nikos Karachalios’ social media post featuring text and a logo suggesting the creation of a new party called “The Wave,” fueled speculation about the formation of a new political entity and the possibility that the leader of the Tempe tragedy victims’ relatives might participate.
Maria Karystianos and “Wave” movement: What really stands
Maria Karystianos, hours after Nikos Karachalios’ post, hastened to declare herself “speechless,” emphasizing that: “I read the text disappointed and remain speechless at the excessive audacity to even present a logo! A deceitful attempt to spread fake news, to connect me with the rotten, old political system,” she stated among other things. Maria Karystianos noted that her attention remains focused on the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), where her important memorandum for criminal investigations against political figures is pending, emphasizing that her action is based on deeds, documents and arguments, without any exception or compromise.
However, yesterday morning, Maria Karystianos had also spoken on the Efimerida ton Syntakton podcast, where what she said made many believe that she was actually “outlining” the creation of a new political effort that would come from ordinary citizens rather than professional politicians.
Declaring herself disappointed with the entire political system, she launched particularly harsh words against Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as well as Alexis Tsipras, saying he is a professional politician who says one thing and does another, emphasizing that there must be change, which will happen through citizens. Regarding her ideological identity, she stressed that she is far from such perception. “I am neither center, nor left, nor right,” she said. She also noted that nothing happens by itself. “I believe it must happen through citizens who can inspire trust, not just from one person.”
She emphasized that she sees the solution already being created. “I have realized that the new is moving fast. The time has come to get out of this situation. We need to organize this better, to protect it. I keep my gaze turned toward this new thing that has started to be created,” she said characteristically. She emphasized, moreover, that people approach her — not only ordinary citizens but also academics — who share their thoughts with her about saving the country. “As soon as this effort is completed, it will also produce its leader,” she said. Concluding, she stressed that “if there is such a group, of course I will cooperate. After all, I also want to have a solution when elections come.”
