Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas spoke to ERTnews about road infrastructure projects being implemented across the country aimed at improving driver safety and decongesting the Attiki Odos highway, presenting a series of critical infrastructure projects currently underway. Regarding the Metamorfosis junction, the minister highlighted that the priority given to vehicles heading toward Elefsina often creates traffic bottlenecks, which is why the project focuses on separating lanes for better traffic flow.

The intervention will separate the two directions as the new arrangement makes them independent. From Elefsina, vehicles will enter Attiki Odos earlier, while those heading to the airport will exit later, at a distance of 150 meters. This way, convergence into a single lane is avoided and congestion is reduced. “This is not about a new exit, but differentiation,” Mr. Dimas clarified, adding that the arrangement will double the volume of vehicles.
Traffic measures will be implemented during the intervention, and its completion is expected to be ready by 2026.
The Infrastructure Minister also referred to the following projects:
- Skaramanga junction intervention: The connection of Aigaleo Ring Road with Attiki Odos through the triple Skaramanga junction will be tendered in October, with a budget of 70 million euros. The project is expected to reduce the presence of heavy vehicles on Kifissos and provide relief to western Athens.
- Kymis Avenue: The extension of Kymis Avenue is not in immediate planning, however, Attiki Odos extensions are being considered comprehensively, aiming to improve accessibility and traffic flow.
- Patras – Pyrgos: Project ready by November 2025: The first 65 kilometers of the new Patras-Pyrgos highway will open to traffic on October 31, 2025, while the remaining section will be completed by the end of November 2025.
- Thessaloniki Metro: The operation of the metro in Thessaloniki has already reduced vehicle traffic in the city center by 15%. The extension to Kalamaria, with five new stations, will be delivered in the first quarter of 2026.
- Thessaloniki FlyOver: 30% construction complete – Completion in 2027
- The FlyOver project, which will double vehicle traffic capacity (from 5,000 to 10,000 vehicles), has reached 30% construction and is expected to be completed in May 2027.
- E65 – Western Macedonia connection with Central Greece: The Kalambaka – Grevena junction section of the E65 has exceeded 85% construction. Upon completion, it will connect Western Macedonia with Central Greece, strengthening the hinterland and inter-regional connectivity.
- VOAK – Work has begun: The Northern Road Axis of Crete (VOAK) is proceeding with work at various points, marking the start of one of the most anticipated infrastructure projects on the island.
