In statements upon his arrival at the Council, Stavros Papastaurou initially noted that: “The climate crisis is here, we have been experiencing it intensely in our homeland for years now, we have mourned human lives and suffered great destruction. Consequently, our country supports the direction we are discussing today at the EU Environment Ministers Council and the need to achieve ambitious goals for environmental protection”.
In conclusion, he added: “Beyond being ambitious, the goals must also be realistic, taking into account the economic and social conditions of each country, business competitiveness and most importantly, the difficulties citizens face daily. That’s why we support the review clause and significant flexibilities, so we can build a sustainable and better tomorrow while keeping today safe for everyone. Thank you very much, take care”.
