Grief has spread throughout Patras following the fatal traffic accident that occurred on Friday evening, August 29, on Akti Dymaion street, when a motorcycle struck an 86-year-old woman and the 7-year-old girl she was accompanying.
According to information from flamis.gr, Titika Vasilopoulou lost her life instantly, while little Maria was taken to “Karamandaneio” Children’s Hospital with minor injuries. The 7-year-old was saved due to the self-sacrifice of the 86-year-old, who had often cared for the family’s children.
The 7-year-old’s father, Giorgos Kostouros, described with deep emotion the tragic moments he experienced: “The grandmother pushed my daughter onto the sidewalk and that’s how the child was saved. She became a shield to save my Maria.”

He characteristically stated in his Facebook post: “This is the blood of my daughter and the unfortunate grandmother who sacrificed her life to save my 7-year-old daughter. The incident happened at 10 PM in the southern park, at the height of Maximou street. The reckless driver struck the grandmother and my child. The grandmother died instantly, while the child has some injuries. She saved my daughter with her own life.” Additionally, in his post, the father asks for help identifying the driver who struck them both, calling on anyone who knows something to contact him.
How the traffic accident in Patras happened – ran a red light
It should be noted that the woman, who was not a relative but a neighbor of the family, had their trust and was accustomed to taking the children for walks. On that fateful evening, she was at the accident scene with the 7-year-old.
Traffic police arrested the 46-year-old motorcycle driver, who was slightly injured. According to eyewitnesses, he had run a red light and then accelerated before hitting the elderly woman and the 7-year-old.
