The alternative home heating methods (ranked from cheapest to most expensive by mechanical engineers) are pulling ahead of traditional options like oil-fired boilers, fireplaces, wood-burning stoves, and even air conditioning units. This year, the focus has shifted firmly toward energy savings — now a top priority alongside simply staying warm on cold winter nights and days.
“Our goal is to play defense against the energy assault consumers are facing,” says energy consultant Vasilis Christodoulou, speaking to “A.” He points out that there is no single, universally cheap energy source. “The cheapest energy is the energy we don’t need to consume,” he notes, directing attention to proper building insulation. “One of the most important factors in keeping heating costs low is proper energy-proofing of the building. Modern thermal insulation materials are now installed in new homes as well as renovated ones […] If, alongside insulation, residents choose high-quality aluminum window frames, warmth stays inside for longer periods. Sealed gaps and interior doors, closed shutters, blinds, and curtains at night all create an additional barrier against the cold.”
