A piece of intelligence received from the United States set in motion the investigation that led to the arrest of a well-known 52-year-old obstetrician-gynecologist who runs a private practice in the northern suburbs of Athens and is facing charges related to child pornography. The digital trail left behind by the uploading of child sexual abuse material to an online storage service became the starting point for investigators from the Cybercrime Division, who successfully identified the account holder and tracked him down.
The case has caused considerable shock, as the 52-year-old is a well-regarded figure in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, with an active practice in the northern suburbs and professional ties to maternity clinics across Attica. According to reports, he had built a large patient base and was widely recognized in his field — with no prior indications of such criminal behavior, as confirmed by the president of the obstetricians-gynecologists’ association.
The tip from the US and the digital investigation into the gynecologist
The countdown to the 52-year-old’s arrest began when the Cybercrime Division received intelligence through the American organization the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), which works to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation.
According to the information passed on to Greek authorities, a user had uploaded files containing child sexual abuse material to an online storage platform. This intelligence launched a digital investigation, with detectives tracing the electronic footprints linked to the account.
Through the analysis of available digital data and online forensic research, investigators were able to identify the 52-year-old and determine his place of residence. The investigation did not originate from a patient complaint, but from the intelligence report about the illegal material being uploaded online.
Searches at the home and clinic — what investigators found
On the afternoon of Thursday, October 8, officers from the Cybercrime Division carried out searches at both the suspect’s home and his medical practice, seizing a range of electronic devices and storage media. Items confiscated included a mobile phone, a computer hard drive, a laptop, a tablet, and a microSD memory card.
The subsequent forensic examination confirmed, according to police, that the suspect had been managing the online account to which the illegal material had been uploaded. Investigators also discovered hundreds of image and video files containing child sexual abuse material, including depictions of children clearly under the age of 15 — and in some cases under the age of 12.
These findings led to the immediate arrest of the 52-year-old under the flagrante delicto procedure, while the seized digital evidence has been forwarded to the Forensic Investigations Division for further laboratory analysis.
Shock in the medical community and a Monday court appearance
The arrest of the prominent obstetrician-gynecologist came as a shock to his colleagues, as he had never previously raised any concerns among his professional circle regarding behavior of this nature. The 52-year-old is expected to appear before an examining magistrate on Monday, October 12.
