Five hundred people are still living in containers, five years after the powerful earthquake that struck Arkalochori in the Heraklion region of Crete, according to statements made on Monday morning (28/09) by Kostas Gkantatsios, president of the Earthquake Victims Association “ELPIDA.” Speaking on Parapolitika 90.1 during the morning show “Morning Departure” with Eri Panagou, Mr. Gkantatsios added that many people are living in “yellow-flagged” homes with structural cracks, staying with their children, or converting storage spaces into makeshift residences.

Regarding housing, Kostas Gkantatsios emphasized that authorities are citing property ownership disputes as a major obstacle, with 160 files still unresolved, while 260 homes are set to go to auction by the end of December. He further noted that 400 buildings are scheduled for demolition.
