New, higher fares for taxi rides to and from Greece’s two major airports and city centers — as well as increased waiting charges — are set under the new pricing structure announced by SATA (the Athens Taxi Owners Association). According to the association’s announcement, the fare revision came following discussions between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and industry representatives, and is expected to take effect immediately after the relevant decision is published in the Government Gazette (FEK). The new pricing, as stated in the announcement, comes “following persistent pressure and a well-documented recommendation for the need to adjust fares to today’s economic realities and the actual operating costs of taxis.”
Under the new regulations:
- The fixed fare for the route from the airport to central Athens is set at €50
- The corresponding nighttime fare, from 00:00 to 05:00, is set at €65
- In Thessaloniki, the fixed fare to the airport rises to €38, up from the current €28
- The waiting time charge increases to €20 per hour, up from the current €15

“The fare adjustment is a necessary step for the financial viability of the professional taxi driver, as the sector’s operating costs have risen significantly in recent years. The taxi is a key link in urban and tourist transportation, and professional drivers are faced daily with rising costs for fuel, maintenance, insurance, taxation, and general vehicle operation,” SATA stated in its announcement.
The association also noted that it considers “this decision to be an acknowledgment of the day-to-day reality experienced by professionals in the sector.”
Finally, SATA made clear that “the fare adjustment does not mean the end of our demands,” signaling that it will continue to push for a new operational framework for the industry in the Attica region.
