SYRIZA has entered electoral proceedings mode over the past few hours, as — following yet another turbulent day — the party’s remaining MPs will be called upon this Saturday to elect a new parliamentary group leader. With all eyes on these developments, circles close to Pavlos Polakis are now calling on Rena Dourou to voluntarily and by mutual consent withdraw her candidacy for the parliamentary group presidency. These sources stress that the only condition under which SYRIZA can return to a winning path — reconnect with society and secure parliamentary representation in the next parliament — is for Pavlos Polakis to be unanimously elected parliamentary group leader and placed at the helm of the upcoming electoral battle.
Specifically, “circles close to Pavlos Polakis” stated the following: “The only condition that can bring SYRIZA-PS back onto a winning path — based on its own objectives — reconnect it with a suffocating society, and secure its parliamentary representation in the next parliament, is for him to be unanimously elevated to the position of parliamentary group leader and placed at the forefront of the upcoming electoral battle!
The prerequisites for this are:
— The refinement of political strategy and the replenishment of central party bodies and positions of responsibility at Saturday’s Central Committee meeting.
— The voluntary and consensual withdrawal of Rena Dourou’s candidacy for the position of parliamentary group leader, and the elevation of Pavlos Polakis to that position the following week, following the party’s reorganization as decided by the Central Committee.”
Polakis fires back at Famellos
Earlier, Pavlos Polakis dramatically escalated tensions by launching a sharp attack against Socrates Famellos, directly accusing him of “pettiness” and “unworthiness.”
The trigger was the former SYRIZA leader’s fierce reaction to the procedures followed during the parliamentary group session. According to reports, Socrates Famellos contacted the party’s parliamentary spokesperson, Giorgos Xanthopoulos, by phone to express his opposition to the decision to hold the election for the parliamentary group secretary before the election for parliamentary group president. He reportedly described the move as “unacceptable maneuvering” that, in his view, was paving the way for Pavlos Polakis’s candidacy.
The response from the MP for Chania was immediate and explosive, confirming that — despite his return to the parliamentary group — the internal party conflict within SYRIZA is entering a new phase, with the balance of power remaining extremely fragile.
As Polakis wrote in a post: “And a Famellos of the sidelines and the ‘I’m supporting another party’ variety, in a display of pettiness and unworthiness, came out to say that I was wrong to return and that I would be putting myself forward as a candidate for parliamentary group president!!! The excess of sorrow……”
