A brief cool spell, scattered showers and thunderstorms across the mainland, and strong winds raising wildfire risk — that’s the weather picture shaping up for the first weekend of July. As meteorologist Nikos Kanteres tells parapolitika.gr, no heatwave episode is on the horizon through the early days of next week — however, after mid-month, the summer’s first major heat surge is likely to make its move.
According to Kanteres, on Saturday, July 4, thermal instability will trigger cloud build-up, bringing sporadic rainfall and isolated thunderstorms — mainly during midday and afternoon hours — across Central and Northern Greece, as well as parts of the Peloponnese. Overnight, conditions will ease and the weather will gradually improve.
On Sunday, July 5, weather phenomena will be significantly reduced, with mostly fair conditions prevailing across the country. Temperatures over the weekend will dip slightly, though the drop won’t be particularly noticeable.
Nikos Kanteres: No heatwave expected until at least July 10
According to Kanteres, the opening days of the new week show no signs of a heatwave. “Until at least the 10th of the month, there’s no indication of a heatwave hitting the country,” he states clearly.
He also notes that this summer has so far passed without a single heatwave episode, confirming earlier forecasts that predicted June would remain free of extreme temperatures.
When is the first heat surge expected?
That said, Kanteres believes it’s unlikely that all of July will pass without a significant heat intrusion. “There’s no scenario where July goes by without heatwave episodes. I believe that after the 12th to 15th of the month, we’ll see the first hot air mass pushing in from Libya. For now, it doesn’t appear to be particularly intense — but we need to monitor how it develops, how long it lasts, and what temperature levels it brings,” he explains. He is nonetheless reassuring, stressing there is no cause for alarm. “There’s no need to panic. We’ve been through far more intense heatwaves. When we have a clearer picture, we’ll provide the appropriate updates,” he concludes.
