Crete: Complaint that disability benefits withheld from 9-year-old with hearing problems due to parents’ debts
A 9-year-old child from Heraklion, who faces hearing problems, risks being left without essential hearing aids, as part of the financial assistance the family is entitled to is reportedly being offset against the parents’ debts to the public sector.
According to the child’s mother, the child needs hearing aids to be able to cope at school and in daily communication, however the process of granting benefits encounters obstacles due to existing debts to the tax office.
As alleged, while part of the assistance from EOPYY (National Organization for Healthcare Services Provision) is unseizable, the second benefit covering the cost of hearing aids is not protected, resulting in it being offset against debts.
