Leonardo helicopters: Advanced aviation systems and high safety levels
Specifically, as stated in the related announcement, the Leonardo AW139 features powerful engines, advanced aviation systems with the capacity to transport up to 15 passengers, offering a high level of safety. Additionally, as emphasized, “thanks to its reliability, performance and operational flexibility, it is one of the most widespread helicopters in its category internationally.” The configuration of the newly acquired helicopters includes modern systems and equipment, such as rescue hoist, emergency floats, cargo sling system, medical equipment and electro-optical/infrared camera (EO/IR), so they can respond effectively and safely to a wide range of operational missions.
In the coming period, the acceptance procedure by the competent committee will follow, which is estimated to be completed by the end of June.
The procurement of the helicopters is implemented through the “AEGIS” program and is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund. “With their integration, the aviation support capabilities of the Civil Protection mechanism are further enhanced, particularly in the areas of search and rescue, medical evacuations and crisis management,” notes the ministry’s announcement, while emphasizing that the official integration of the new assets will take place at a later time, after the completion of the prescribed procedures.
