Fire in Aspropurgos – Flames racing toward Mount Parnitha
Strong winds, steep terrain gradient and the rugged topography of the area helped the fire front spread rapidly, raising concerns about potential expansion toward the mountainous mass of Mount Parnitha. However, the large-scale operation mounted from land and air managed to halt the fire’s progress before it reached uncontrollable proportions.
Massive firefighting force mobilization
The operation involved a total of 108 firefighters, six hiking teams from the 1st EMODE unit, two METPE teams, volunteers, 32 fire trucks and five helicopters operating at intervals, with one helicopter handling aerial coordination. Support was also provided by water trucks and construction machinery from the Attica Regional Authority.
Throughout the operation, ESKEDIK maintained continuous surveillance through the drone’s optical and thermal cameras, monitoring the fire front’s evolution in real time.
The fire did not threaten any homes or infrastructure, and fire services managed to bring the front under control within a short time frame.
Meanwhile, the Arson Crime Investigation Unit has taken over investigating the fire’s causes. According to preliminary findings, the initial outbreak point is located in an area where tires, debris and bulky items were present.
