The Foreign Ministry received the report from the General Staff regarding the discovery of the marine drone in Lefkada, which confirms it is of Ukrainian manufacture and origin. According to senior diplomatic sources, the report’s details are classified and will not be made public unless the General Staff decides otherwise. In the coming days, Athens will issue a formal protest through Giorgos Gerapetritis to the Ukrainian government.
Gerapetritis briefs Kaja Kallas about the Lefkada drone incident
Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, who participated in the Informal Meeting of Foreign Ministers in Cyprus, briefed EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas about the report’s contents. Additionally, Mr. Gerapetritis raised the issue directly with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, who also participated in the summit in Limassol, Cyprus. Athens will issue a formal diplomatic protest to the Ukrainian government in the coming days.
Issue raised at Foreign Affairs Council
It should be noted that the Foreign Minister had previously raised the unmanned vessel issue at the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, emphasizing it was a “particularly serious development” for which necessary diplomatic steps would be taken toward the country of origin once the investigation was completed.
He had also warned that Greece would not allow military operations to develop in the broader Mediterranean region, particularly toward Greek territory, while highlighting the enormous risk to freedom of navigation and the safety of civilians and the environment. As he characteristically stated, “Greece will take all necessary steps to ensure absolutely that the Mediterranean does not become a theater of military operations.”
