Alarm across many areas in southern Attica has been caused by the strong gas odor observed since Tuesday morning (19/5). The phenomenon is noticeable in Alimos as well, where phones at the Municipality have been “ringing off the hook” since morning from citizens interested in finding out what’s happening.
What residents report about the gas odor
A local resident told Orange Press Agency that the smell became more intense around 12:00 PM and that it “smelled strongly.” A woman living in his apartment building said “something smells, something is burning,” while another tenant experienced dizziness. “I don’t know exactly what happened, I don’t know,” she added.
Municipality of Nea Smyrni announcement
In its announcement, the Municipality of Nea Smyrni states: “A strong unpleasant odor has been observed in the last hour in the Southern Suburbs, specifically in the Municipalities of Nea Smyrni, P. Faliro, Ag. Dimitrios, Kallithea, Glyfada, and Alimos. According to assurances from the competent authorities, the odor does not originate from a natural gas leak. The Municipality of Nea Smyrni has informed state agencies (Civil Protection Directorates) in order to determine exactly what this is about.
However, the PERPA service (Pollution Control and Oil & Gas Conservation) has provided assurance to the Municipality that the odor is not the result of hazardous environmental pollution. The current recommendation is to remain in spaces with closed windows.”
