Revelations about the death of 19-year-old Myrtо continue as her case has shocked Kefalonia and caused outrage across the country. As hours pass, new details emerge about the 19-year-old’s final movements before her death. Testimonies from her childhood friend and mother give a more personal and heartbreaking dimension to the case, while authorities attempt to piece together the puzzle of events through testimonies, findings from the hotel room, and preliminary investigation data. The picture that emerges is extremely disturbing, as it appears the 19-year-old had received warnings not to go out again with the 23-year-old she was with on that fatal night, while her family now demands answers about what exactly happened, what they gave her, and why, as alleged, they left her helpless.
Myrtо: Friend’s warning about the 23-year-old
The 19-year-old’s childhood friend spoke on the show “Truths with Zina” and revealed that Myrtо had mainly online interactions with the 23-year-old over the past month. As she said, she had reasons to worry about this particular person and therefore tried to dissuade her. Her testimony is revealing and particularly harsh: “Not very nice things were being said about this guy. His parents had kicked him out of their house and he had gone to Athens and was working as an escort. But he wouldn’t accept this himself. Yesterday they sent me the link he had as an escort. I told her the day before ‘Myrtо, please, I consider you a smart girl, please don’t go out with this guy again. Please, listen to me.'”
According to what she described, the 19-year-old replied that the 23-year-old would be leaving Kefalonia the next day to return to Athens, so she wouldn’t see him again. Her friend also explained that on the night of the tragedy, Myrtо had informed her she would be going out with her boyfriend, without showing she understood the danger. In the same interview, she wanted to put an end to what was said about the 19-year-old’s photos, clarifying they were makeup work and not her everyday appearance. “This is my job, I used her as a model – so people don’t think the girl wore makeup like that constantly, since they only show these photos. This was my own work, and Myrtо didn’t wear makeup like this. These are professional makeup artist photos.”
Myrtо: Mother’s cry and initial findings
The image of the 19-year-old’s mother is equally shocking, as she cannot believe she lost her child and is waiting, as she says, to see her return home. Holding her photograph in her arms, “so she won’t be cold,” she said: “Myrtо will come tonight, my child hasn’t left, she will come. Tonight. She was away yesterday and will come tonight. Here she is.” She then described her daughter as “a good child, a very gentle child” and revealed that Myrtо didn’t hide things from her. “My Myrtо was a good child, a very gentle child. Both her father and I had her close to us. She had no secrets from us. She told me ‘mom, I’m going out with so-and-so.’ I told her ‘go out, my child.’ I thought, ‘well, it’s after Easter, let her go out.’ At 2:00 AM I sent her a message: ‘My Myrtо, I love you so much. Be careful, my life.’ She told me: ‘Mom, I love you too.’ I told her: ‘Me too, and dad loves you very much.'”
The mother clearly demands three things: explanations, punishment, and answers. “I want them to explain to me how this happened to my child, why they threw her away, and what they gave her. And of course they should be punished, so other children can be saved. What did they give my child? Why did they involve two other people? Why did they kill my child and throw her away helpless? My child would be alive now. They should have made a phone call.” Meanwhile, authorities are examining initial findings from the rented hotel room, where they found fragments of false eyelashes, two blood stains on the bed, a white towel with a stain on the table, as well as blood stains on a towel and the bathroom wall. According to current data, the 19-year-old went to the hotel around midnight with the 23-year-old, later the 26-year-old and 22-year-old joined them, and subsequently, as being investigated, the girl lost consciousness after using cocaine. The three young men allegedly carried her unconscious to Argostoli square and abandoned her, before paramedics found her shortly after and transported her to the hospital, where her death was confirmed.
