“I feel very proud, because Greece has undertaken significant defense initiatives,” said New Democracy MP Makis Boridis, who gave an interview to Parapolitika 90.1 on the show “She and I,” with Thanasis Fouskidis and Stella Gantona, against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East. “There is no expressed threat against Greece, but it’s good to take precautionary measures,” added Mr. Boridis, referring to the military aid our country sent to Cyprus and the Patriot missile system deployed to Karpathos.
“Certainly the Greek government wishes for de-escalation in the Middle East, but a country with theocratic characteristics like Iran cannot have a nuclear program. But we have understood that the missiles Iran possesses can threaten Europe. Furthermore, in the protests in Iran we had 20,000 deaths,” he emphasized. Additionally, Mr. Boridis characterized the approach of Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez as “short-sighted.”
According to Mr. Boridis, just for the stance that Kyriakos Mitsotakis has maintained in foreign policy, we should all be proud.
“There is a ‘cunning’ logic that says we will participate in collective security mechanisms, like NATO and the EU, but we won’t get involved anywhere when needed,” he pointed out, emphasizing that he is very proud of the army we sent to Cyprus.
“Since we are integrated into a complex of defense forces, we cannot pretend we are not. You want to have the good defensive benefits of alliances, but not get involved anywhere. That’s not how it works,” he explained, saying “bravo” to the Prime Minister again.
On OPEKEPE
“Let PASOK come, gather signatures, make another request for a Parliamentary Investigation, if they want,” said Mr. Boridis, referring to the OPEKEPE scandal.
“The argumentation from some opposition parties, like PASOK, SYRIZA and New Left is from seven months ago. 76 witnesses have now passed through the Parliamentary Committee -whoever the opposition wanted- Boridis’s name was not mentioned by anyone,” noted the MP.
“I resigned for reasons of integrity and awaited the outcome of the process. I did what I considered right. Now I feel 100% vindicated. The criminal targeting was clear. I suffered the ordeal of the Parliamentary Committee, but after this let’s make a proper assessment. Was there anyone who said Boridis took half a euro? No,” he added.
On wiretapping
Regarding the court decision on wiretapping and thoughts about political connections, Mr. Boridis said that if the Single-Member Court of Misdemeanors decision is good, then we should also consider good the decision of the Supreme Court judges that says there was no connection between private individuals and political figures.
“So far, we have decisions saying there is no political connection. Prosecutions were brought against natural persons and not political ones,” emphasized Mr. Boridis.
