The tragic shipwreck that left 15 migrants dead off the coast of Chios has mobilized not only Greek but also European authorities, with the Commission taking an official position on the incident that has also sparked political controversy. As reported, authorities are fully informed about the tragedy that unfolded on Tuesday evening (03/2), during which 15 people lost their lives while another 20 were injured, three of whom are hospitalized in very serious condition. “We are aware of the incident off the coast of Chios and are closely monitoring developments. A search and rescue operation was underway throughout the night and we are in close contact with Greek authorities,” said the European Commission’s spokesperson for migration affairs, Margaritis Schinas.

“The investigation continues in order to establish the facts and determine the circumstances under which the incident occurred,” he emphasized, adding that “the investigation belongs, naturally, to the Greek authorities.” The Commission spokesperson then stressed that “every human life lost at sea is a tragedy.” He concluded by noting: “In the hands of smugglers, many people risk and ultimately lose their lives, something we work systematically to prevent. This is why our cooperation with partner countries is so critical.”
