The government of Cyprus, confirming the energy prospects of Block 10, announced a new significant natural gas discovery in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Republic of Cyprus. As announced by Cyprus government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, this development was communicated to the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, during a video conference with ExxonMobil Vice President John Ardill, in the presence of Energy Minister Georgios Papanastasiou and ExxonMobil Cyprus General Manager Varnabas Theodosiou.

The discovery was made at the “Pegasus-1” well, within Block 10, by the consortium of ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Cyprus (Offshore) Limited (as operator) and QatarEnergy International E&P LLC.
The drilling operation, conducted with the “Valaris DS-9” semi-submersible drilling rig, is located approximately 190 kilometers southwest of Cyprus, at a water depth of 1,921 meters. According to preliminary data, a clean natural gas column of 350 meters was identified, which is considered particularly encouraging.
As clarified, further technical analysis of the data will follow in the coming months, with the aim of fully evaluating the reservoir and its potential.
This marks the second natural gas discovery in Block 10 by the same consortium, following the “Glaucus-1” well discovery announced in February 2019. The “Glaucus-2” appraisal well, completed in March 2022, had already confirmed the existence of a high-quality natural gas reservoir.
