«The woman was trapped under the car. Half of her body, from the torso up was underneath the vehicle and her legs were sticking out from under the car», described a resident of Ano Glyfada, on the show «Truths with Zina», regarding the tragedy that occurred in the area, when a 56-year-old woman lost her life due to severe weather. The tragic moments experienced by the 56-year-old were described by an eyewitness, who saw her being swept away by the deadly torrent on Kyrilou Methodiou Street.
George Sombolos was at the scene where the woman was found dead, trapped under a car that had also been swept away by the torrent. As residents said, at that time the volume of water exceeded one meter, carrying stones, wood and other debris that trapped the unfortunate woman under the vehicle.
Ano Glyfada: Witnesses heard her screaming “help”
Witnesses heard her screaming “help” and so they came out onto the street to assist her. «Around 6:00 PM, 6:30 PM when it started raining more intensely, my son went out to check on the cars, to secure them, to see if everything was okay because it looked like it would rain quite a bit but this thing wasn’t apparent. At some point he went down to his own space below, to the semi-basement of our house, which started to flood and when I realized it I shouted for him to come up to the upper floors so he wouldn’t be in danger. And at that moment I heard the neighbors calling for help for the woman. “Someone help the woman, someone help the woman”, these words have haunted me. Immediately my husband came out, my sons to help, along with the neighbors», said the witness. Indeed, as she said, the woman tried to cross the street to go to her house, returning from work.
«She went to cross over. What I can tell you is that because it had started raining very intensely, we were constantly looking out the windows, both us and all the neighbors to see how the cars would behave, because they had started to move. From what the neighbor next door told us and my husband saw her crossing. She went up and down the sidewalk, twice. She passed by our house and was trying to cross the street to go to her own house. The woman was returning from work. Our neighbor asked her if she wanted help and that it was dangerous to walk at that moment in that spot, but she was obviously panicked and didn’t ask for help, nor to enter someone’s house for protection, nor did she speak to him. She was probably in a state of shock too», she said.

Meanwhile, the show «Truths with Zina» also showed documentary footage of the efforts made by residents in Ano Glyfada to save the 56-year-old woman. In the video the force of the water appears to be great, while the water level reached almost waist-high. Of course it wasn’t just water coming, but also the debris it carried along, such as stones, wood and whatever other objects were on the street.
Unfortunately the woman met a tragic death and her neighbors were unable to save her.
