In his first statement following the Republican defeat in the U.S. midterm elections, Donald Trump agreed with a previous comment made by JD Vance, in which Vance suggested that the war in Iran was responsible for the electoral defeat — describing the claim as “largely true.”
“It raised the price of oil somewhat. That’s probably temporary. I thought oil prices would go up much more, and I made my decision based on that assumption. I had to do it,” Trump initially told reporters.
The U.S. president went on to add: “But at the same time, if I had to do it again, I would — because in the long run, it’s the only solution. You can’t let Iran have nuclear weapons,” concluding that the war in Iran “was worth it.”
When asked whether he was concerned about the possibility of impeachment, Trump responded: “No, no, no, not in the least. I think it would destroy the Democratic Party if they tried, because it would be an impeachment with no basis whatsoever. For what reason? Because we want to have a successful country?”
When then asked about the potential firing of U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Trump dismissed the possibility entirely. “No, I’m not replacing Hegseth. He’s doing a very good job.”
