Syrian president Ahmed al-Sharaa has appointed Kurdish leader Mazloum Abdi as a presidential adviser, just days after Abdi announced the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as part of an integration agreement with Damascus.

“Mustafa Khalil Abdi is appointed adviser to the presidency of the Republic,” reads the decree signed by al-Sharaa and broadcast by Syria’s official state news agency SANA.
Abdi, the former commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, announced on Tuesday the dissolution of the SDF as an independent military force — a significant step in a broader plan to integrate Kurdish institutions into the Syrian state, agreed earlier this year with the Islamist government in Damascus.
