The head of military intelligence for the Libyan National Army (LNA), controlled by Marshal Khalifa Haftar in eastern Libya, was killed on Monday in a bombing attack in Benghazi, according to two security sources who spoke to Reuters. Brigadier General Fawzi Mansouri lost his life when an explosive device detonated inside his vehicle outside his residence in the Hawari district of Benghazi on Monday afternoon.
The two sources, who requested anonymity, were unable to clarify who was responsible for the attack, nor did they provide further details about the explosive device.

The assassination of the senior military official once again highlights the serious security challenges that Libya continues to face. The country remains divided between two rival governments, while numerous armed factions compete for influence and control at both the national and local level. Despite the 2020 ceasefire, which brought large-scale hostilities to an end, the situation remains deeply fragile.
Libya, home to Africa’s largest proven oil reserves, remains effectively split between east and west. The country’s political and military division is a direct consequence of the 2011 uprising, backed by NATO, which led to the overthrow and death of Muammar Gaddafi.
Haftar’s Libyan National Army, commanded alongside his sons, controls most of eastern and southern Libya and backs the government based in Benghazi. In western Libya, the rival, internationally recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) is headquartered in Tripoli and maintains control over most of the region.
