Spanish MEP Adrián Vázquez Lázara was outraged by how the European Parliament canteen prepared a traditional Galician dish. Seeking to defend his region’s reputation, he responded with a “corrective” meal. This move wasn’t just culinary but also political, aimed at highlighting Galicia as the EU’s most important fishing power.
Spanish MEP Adrián Vázquez Lázara’s reaction to traditional Galician dish controversy
MEP Adrián Vázquez Lázara organized a meal featuring the iconic polbo á feira. The “fake” version served by the European Parliament canteen was the trigger. “Everything was wrong with this fake ‘Galician-style octopus’. Octopus mixed with squid and broccoli which is never eaten in Galicia. This octopus was as Galician as the Parliament building is Renaissance: not at all,” Vázquez said according to Politico.
This isn’t the first time such incidents have occurred in EU institutions. The European Parliament cafeteria served veggie burgers the day after MEPs voted to ban them. In another case, European Central Bank staff complained about the low quality of olive oil served with lunch salads.
