A proposal from Iran, which has so far been rejected by Donald Trump, envisions the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the termination of the American blockade on Iran, leaving nuclear program negotiations for later. This was stated by a high-ranking Iranian official.
US-Iran: No agreement after hostilities
Four weeks after the suspension of bombings by the United States and Israel against Iran, no agreement has been reached to end the war, which has caused serious disruptions to global energy supplies.
Iran continues for more than two months to block almost all maritime transport from the Gulf, except its own, while last month the US imposed a blockade on ships from Iranian ports.
Trump’s reaction: “They’re asking for things I cannot accept”
Donald Trump stated on Friday that he is “not satisfied” with Tehran’s latest proposal, without providing more details. “They’re asking for things I cannot agree to,” he characteristically told reporters at the White House.
Washington has repeatedly made clear that it will not end the war without an agreement that would definitively prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. This was also the main objective Trump cited when he began the strikes in February, amid negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program.
For its part, Iran insists that its nuclear program is exclusively peaceful in nature.
Iran’s strategy and new negotiation framework
According to the Iranian official, who spoke anonymously, Tehran believes its proposal to postpone nuclear program discussions to a later stage represents a significant concession aimed at facilitating an agreement.
Under the plan:
- The war would end with guarantees that the US and Israel would not attack again
- Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz
- The US would lift the blockade
Terms for future talks
Nuclear program negotiations would take place at a later time, aiming for restrictions on Iran’s program in exchange for lifting sanctions. Tehran asks Washington to recognize its right to uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes, even if it agrees to temporary suspension. “Talks on the most complex issue are being moved to the final stage to create a more favorable climate,” the official said.
Official proposal through mediators
As Reuters had already reported, Tehran had proposed opening the Strait before resolving nuclear differences. The Iranian official confirmed that this new timeline has now been officially submitted to the United States through mediators.
