Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis accompanied his social media post with footage from his visit to Thessaloniki today. The video he published includes highlights from the handover ceremony of the Thessaloniki Metro extension to Kalamaria, as well as from his speech at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. “The extension of the Thessaloniki Metro to Kalamaria is now a reality. We said we would do it, and we did!” Kyriakos Mitsotakis wrote in his message, commenting on the completion of the project.

The handover ceremony took place at the “Mikra” station. During his speech, the Prime Minister highlighted the significance of the project for Thessaloniki, underscoring that the city now boasts a Metro system that, as he noted, ranks among the most modern and beautiful in Europe.
“Thessaloniki can take pride in a Metro that is one of the most modern and beautiful in Europe,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated at the handover ceremony for the Thessaloniki Metro extension to Kalamaria, held at the “Mikra” station, under the central theme “The city moves forward — Kalamaria transforms.”
The extension to Kalamaria marked the first part of Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ visit to Thessaloniki today, with the Prime Minister linking the infrastructure project to the city’s broader development trajectory.

Later, Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall at an event themed “National Strategy for Regional and Local Development — Northern Greece.” Against the backdrop of the slogan “Thessaloniki moves forward. We said it. We’re doing it,” the Prime Minister placed strong emphasis on the city’s broader geopolitical and developmental role. As he stressed, Thessaloniki “is seeking and reclaiming its natural role” — not merely as the capital of Northern Greece, but as a city with far-reaching influence across the Balkans.
He further connected this vision to the major geopolitical shifts currently unfolding, presenting Thessaloniki as a key reference point for Northern Greece and the wider Balkan region.
