The MP for Arta, Olga Gerovasili, is now officially an independent MP, having sent a formal letter on Monday morning to the Speaker of the Greek Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis. Ms. Gerovasili had already made her intentions clear before Parliament broke for the summer recess; however, since she held the position of Deputy Speaker, she remained in her role in order to facilitate parliamentary procedures.

The number of independent MPs now stands at 53, while the SYRIZA parliamentary group has been reduced to just 11 members. It is worth noting that just days ago, Rena Douru demanded that Ms. Gerovasili relinquish her Arta parliamentary seat — a demand that ultimately went unfulfilled.
