The landscape still looks like a war zone, with grey dominating the scene as the devastation left by the wildfire remains painfully visible. Just a few weeks have passed since the catastrophic fire that swept through Porto Germeno, and residents are still counting the cost. Unsurprisingly, the area has not yet returned to any semblance of normality. Under different circumstances, as both locals and holidaymakers recall, this time of year around the Assumption of Mary holiday would have been filled with very different, festive scenes. Now, however, what matters most is making the area liveable again — electricity is being gradually restored to homes that survived the blaze, while repair work on the exteriors of damaged properties is still ongoing.

Porto Germeno: 79 homes declared unsafe for habitation
According to official data, 79 homes have been classified as “red” — meaning they must be demolished before their owners can apply for new building permits and begin reconstruction. For those rebuilding, the Greek government has committed to a 100% state subsidy, amounting to €1,000 per square metre for properties up to 150 square metres.
Beyond the 79 “red” properties, structural inspections found that 56 homes were classified as “yellow” and 57 as “green.” Regarding the payment timeline, compensation is to be disbursed within 10 days of the relevant municipal documentation confirming eligible beneficiaries being submitted to the ministry.
Despite the scale of the ecological disaster, hope has not faded: everyone who holds fond memories of this corner of Greece is hoping that Prosilion and Porto Germeno will gradually reclaim the natural beauty that made them among the most cherished destinations in the Attica region.
