Documentary footage captures the exact location where the devastating wildfire broke out in Boeotia, which ignited on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. at a site known as “Mavro Spithari,” near Agios Vasileios. This was one of two major fire fronts that spread rapidly on Saturday, threatening the region of Western Attica.

According to the Fire Service, the fire originated from a spark caused by cable oscillations in a private electricity transmission network connected to a wind farm of five turbines. In connection with the incident, authorities arrested the owner of the technical company responsible for the design and supervision of the project, as well as the contractor who carried out the construction of the network. The two suspects are being brought before the Thebes Public Prosecutor, facing serious charges of arson with potential criminal intent.
A history of repeat incidents at the same location
The area had already been the scene of a similar incident just weeks earlier. Only 100 meters from the current ground zero, on June 7th, another fire had broken out due to a spark from the same network, burning through 60 acres before firefighting crews managed to bring it under control. According to information from ERT, following that first fire, firefighters had cut the cables on site. Although the company subsequently carried out repair work on the damaged infrastructure, the outcome suggests that the underlying technical problem was never truly resolved — ultimately leading to the new and far more catastrophic blaze.
