The weather in August is expected to undergo significant changes throughout the month, according to current medium-range forecast data. The first ten days are expected to bring milder temperatures and stronger Etesian winds, while from mid-month a shift in weather patterns is emerging, with increased chances of a warm air intrusion and a heatwave episode. Based on current data, Assumption Day (August 15th) also appears set to unfold under particularly hot conditions. Dimitris Kampolis, a physicist specializing in Environmental Science and Meteorology and holder of a postgraduate degree in Environmental Studies and Climate Change, has presented the medium-range assessment of the YouWeather Statistical Model (YSM), outlining the evolution of weather conditions across each ten-day period.
August weather: Cool spells and Etesian winds in the first ten days
According to the analysis, the opening days of August will be characterized by a strengthened northerly airflow over the Aegean Sea, resulting in temperatures near or slightly below average climatic values, particularly across eastern and southern mainland Greece and the islands. At the same time, small negative anomalies in the upper atmospheric layers are favoring the development of localized thermal instability, especially over mountainous inland areas, where isolated afternoon thunderstorms cannot be ruled out. Despite the cooler start, overall rainfall is expected to remain limited, with the country continuing to face conditions of elevated drought.
Warm air intrusion and heatwave from mid-month
The picture changes markedly in the second ten-day period (August 11–20), as forecast data indicate a strengthening of warm air masses, particularly over the western and southern parts of the country.
Positive temperature anomalies at the 850 hPa level, combined with prevailing anticyclonic conditions, significantly increase the likelihood of an organized warm air intrusion or heatwave. At the same time, rainfall becomes even more restricted, maintaining the precipitation deficit and prolonging dry conditions.
Based on current data, the weather around Assumption Day (August 15th) is expected to be influenced by this warm intrusion, with temperatures running above normal for this time of year.
During the third ten-day period (August 21–31), the warm trend appears to persist, albeit with a slight weakening in intensity. Temperatures will continue to hover near or slightly above average values, mainly across western and southern Greece, while the Aegean is expected to see a gradual return of Etesian winds — though not enough to bring a noticeable drop in temperature.
Rainfall will continue to be limited across most of the country, with the only exception being some localized convective thunderstorms that may develop over the mountains of northern Greece.
Meteorologists emphasize that this represents a medium-range trend and not a detailed daily forecast, as forecast data may be refined as the relevant dates approach. Nevertheless, the overall picture currently taking shape points to an August that will begin with milder and windier conditions and conclude with weather that is noticeably warmer and drier than seasonal norms.
