An unending tragedy has struck Chalkidiki, as the father of a family involved in a road accident has also lost his life. The crash occurred on the provincial road between Polygyros and Agios Nikolaos, near Metamorfosi, when the family’s vehicle collided with a tanker truck. The family’s second child remains hospitalized with injuries, having been transported by an EKAB ambulance. Earlier, the mother and the infant had already lost their lives.
Tragedy in Chalkidiki: How the accident happened
According to information available so far, the road accident occurred on the provincial road between Nea Moudania and Nikiti, near Polygyros in Chalkidiki, at approximately 6:30 PM, in the area of Metamorfosi. The father was driving the vehicle when, for reasons still unknown, he lost control of the car. The vehicle veered off the road and crashed directly into a tanker truck.
As a result, the mother and infant were killed instantly, while the father and another minor child were transported in critical condition to Polygyros Hospital. The father subsequently passed away at the hospital, while the remaining family member is fighting for their life. Firefighters also responded to the scene, using rescue equipment to extract the woman and infant from the vehicle.
It is worth noting that 8 firefighters with 3 vehicles took part in the rescue operation. The causes of the accident are being investigated by the relevant authorities.
Traffic disruptions due to the accident
As a result of the accident, the Sithonia provincial road remains closed. Until 8:00 PM, traffic was being diverted via alternative routes. Drivers traveling from Sithonia toward Thessaloniki are being redirected through Metaggitsi, while significant congestion has built up within the village of Metamorfosi, where long queues of vehicles have formed as many drivers choose the coastal road toward Vatopedi. For those traveling from Thessaloniki toward Sithonia, traffic police are stopping vehicles at the Vatopedi junction.
